Navigating the Uncertain Future

In the ever-changing landscape of our world, leaders are faced with unprecedented challenges, uncertainties, and complexities. As followers of Christ, we are called not only to navigate these uncharted waters but to do so with faith, wisdom, and foresight.

I often feel like the only one who can get lost with my car satnav. I could blame the GPS, but the truth is that it is me who is not paying attention.

Leaders are faced with unprecedented challenges, uncertainties, and complexities.

In the Bible, we find instances where individuals faced uncertain situations, relying on God's guidance to navigate them. Joseph's journey from slavery to leadership in Egypt (Genesis 37-45) serves as an example of a leader who faced unexpected scenarios. Through unwavering faith and reliance on God, Joseph was able to interpret dreams, navigate crises, and ultimately play a crucial role in the fulfilment of God's plan.

As Christian leaders, we can learn from Joseph's example by remaining open to diverse scenarios and trusting in God's providence. Proverbs 16:9 (NIV) reminds us, "In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps." This verse encourages us to surrender our plans to God, acknowledging His sovereignty over our lives and leadership.

“Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Will he not first sit down and estimate the cost to see if he has enough money to complete it” (Luke 14:28).

Having studied strategic foresight I learnt that there is no certain future only probable scenarios. Christian leaders follow the God who knows and we can go to when we lack wisdom. James 1:5 (NIV) encourages us, "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you”, because In Isaiah 46:9-10 we are told, God knows the future “I am God, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose.”

Yet this does not mean that Christian leaders should not carry out a strategic analysis of a situation. Luke records Jesus teaching, “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Will he not first sit down and estimate the cost to see if he has enough money to complete it” (Luke 14:28).

The Bible gives us the principles to determine the strategy.

However, just as Jesus taught the disciples to think and act according to the principles of the kingdom, so we too, can develop our understanding of the principles of the kingdom and their application to the mission and ministry of our organisations. Daniel was elevated to a high position in the court of Nebuchadnezzar because of his knowledge of God and served Darius as one of three administrators.

Strategy on an organisational level should be a team effort; it is not to be done alone. We should join with others who have diverse views and experiences. In Proverbs 15:22, Solomon says, “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.” Proverbs 20:18 says “Make plans by seeking advice; if you wage war, obtain guidance.”

We can plan for the future, but we must commit our plans to God. “To man belong the plans of the heart, but from the Lord comes the reply of the tongue. All a man’s ways seem innocent to him, but motives are weighed by the Lord. Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed” (Proverbs 16:1-3). No matter how many books on success you may have read, this will always be the ultimate key to success.

Pay attention to the ultimate satnav, the Bible, seeking His Kingdom, careful strategy and seeking wisdom from others, leaders can navigate uncharted waters with faith, wisdom, and a commitment to fulfilling God's purpose.

Biblical Principles for Uncertain Times:

a. Faith Over Fear: 2 Timothy 1:7 (NIV) reminds us, "For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love, and self-discipline." In times of uncertainty, leaders anchor themselves in faith rather than succumbing to fear. Trusting in God's promises and seeking His guidance will empower us to lead with confidence.

b. Seeking Wisdom: Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV) urges us, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." In uncertain times, leaders must seek divine wisdom through prayer, reflection, and discernment. God's wisdom surpasses human understanding and equips leaders to make decisions aligned with His purpose.

c. Adaptability and Flexibility: James 1:5 (NIV) encourages us, "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you." Leaders must remain adaptable, relying on God's wisdom to navigate changing circumstances. Flexibility allows us to respond to unexpected challenges with grace and resilience.

In conclusion, If you, like me are feeling directionless, like me with my car satnav, and have begun to lose your sense of direction, pay attention to the ultimate satnav, the Bible, seeking His Kingdom, careful strategy and seeking wisdom from others, leaders can navigate uncharted waters with faith, wisdom, and a commitment to fulfilling God's purpose. As we lead, let us remember Proverbs 19:21 (NIV): "Many are the plans in a person's heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails."
